Schlägerstraße 2, Hanover

Category: Facade renovation
Total construction time: 15 weeks

A block of flats built in 1958 in Hanover city centre

Challenges

To keep construction time to an absolute minimum in the interest of the residents of the nine flats.

Innovation

The new facade is based on a system of wood fibre insulation material and exterior render, enabling it to blend perfectly into its surrounding neighbourhood. The modernisation presented the opportunity for subtle modifications to the building's structure.

The south-facing recessed balconies were transformed into enclosed sunrooms with generous glass-encased room modules to provide more fully usable living space.

Solution

Up to 10 m long and storey-high facade elements with integrated window elements were used here.

Transfer

Building modernisation and the conversion of existing buildings is an area of growing importance for the highly efficient timber construction industry and serves to demonstrate that facade modernisation with the use of highly insulated wooden elements is compatible with end-to-end ecological considerations and sustainability.

Sustainability

The construction measures involved improving the energy performance of the building shell, converting the heating system, partially renewing the bathrooms and extending the loft space into an additional apartment.

The building now meets KfW Efficient House 70 Standard

Result

The extremely short construction period of just 15 weeks was achieved thanks to the high degree of pre-fabrication of the construction elements.
