REMO Showroom, Stilhof, Munich

Category: Commercial building
Construction period: 1/2015 – 4/2015

Tile retailer REMO and affiliated company STILHOF presented us with a challenging task:

Challenge:

The brief was to create a new showroom on a commercial site in Brunnthal near Munich whose architecture would reflect the client’s sophisticated design requirements. A very short design and construction period was also required to enable the smooth transfer of the company to the new building without interrupting operations.

Innovation:

The building is constructed in BauBuche, laminated veneer beech lumber. Thanks to its extraordinary strength, BauBuche can be used to make considerably slimmer building components than similar softwood composites. Thanks to BauBuche’s attractive finish, structures built in it are predestined for visible prominence.

Solution:

To comply with the conditions of the brief, the decision to build in timber was taken at a very early stage. This was the only way that a considerable proportion of the pre-design and pre-fabrication processes could be completed in the winter months and the project could be completed within the required construction period of just nine months.

Result:

The building presents as a black monolith which stands out clearly from the surrounding warehouses.

Transfer:

As many as possible of the raw surfaces in the interior were left visible: the timber beams and ceilings create a warm atmosphere and contrast with the more industrial character of the raw concrete staircase and lift core. These rough and ready materials also contrast sharply with the high quality parquet and tiled flooring and the bathroom, furniture and fireplace fittings presented in the showroom.
