Category: workshop and administrative building
Construction time: May to October 2013

A workshop building - appealing both in terms of functionality and aesthetics – that serves as a model.

Challenge:

As part of a feasibility study, regional offices and studios were requested to present their design concepts for a new wood workshop with administrative offices and modern energy supply. The building’s design had to enable it to be flexibly adapted to changing requirements.

Innovation:

A trussless shed structure made of wood with northern exposure extends over the building. This provides natural ventilation on the northern side, which has few windows, as well as installation space for photovoltaic modules.

Solution:

The mixed construction technique using a solid floor slab, the core structures and selectively positioned concrete columns enables the plans to add another floor, which are indicated by the concrete ceiling already in place, to be carried out without major expenditure.

Result:

In addition to the great emphasis on creating a healthy working environment, other components, such as economic factors and eco-friendliness, brought the project to the attention of the German Federal Environmental Foundation, which included it in its promotional activities as an exemplary construction project.

Transfer:

The floorplan has been kept free thanks to the innovative roof solution and the walls of the warehouse can be entirely used as storage space. With its systematic use of the renewable material wood, IWL is pointing the way forward in terms of resource-saving construction - and not just externally.
