GWG München – Badgasteiner-/Fernpaßstraße

The use of wood as a construction material for the energy-performance modernization of floors and the addition of floors to basic residential buildings constructed in the 1950s self-assuredly develops a new exemplary type of architecture.


The residential accommodation in Badgasteiner Straße was built during the 1950s and had to be brought into line with modern living conditions. The proposal was to construct model timber-framed housing meeting both cost-efficiency and environmental requirements.


During the preparatory stage of the project, the construction task was fleshed out in cooperation with the Chair for Timber Structures at the TU München as a student seminar design project. The formation of the architectural and specialist planning team at the start of the project enabled the definition of a joint list of implementable objectives.


The new replacement building was completely constructed using the timber-frame method in line with the latest standardization requirements and research developments.


The building was awarded the “Holzbaupreis Bayern 2014“ (2014 Bavarian Timber Construction Prize).


In the reasons for their decision, the judges indicated that both the significant qualitative improvement of the apartments and the major increase in planning density represented a successful solution to current issues in growing cities.
